Kevin Gausman scheduled to start Blue Jays' final spring game on Monday with hopes of securing first start of the season

DUNEDIN, Fla. – Kevin Gausman is planning to start the Toronto Blue Jays’ spring training finale Monday against the Pittsburgh Pirates, a step that should set him up for his first turn in the rotation during the regular season.

The ace right-hander emerged from an encouraging side session Saturday feeling good and will make the trip to Bradenton, Fla., to throw “three innings, 55 pitches and go from there,” he said Sunday morning.

“I want to get in a game and get used to everything,” he added, “clock, PitchCom, check those boxes before the season is about to start.”

Barring a surprise, that positions Gausman to start on the back-end of the rotation’s first turn. Had he not experienced some shoulder soreness earlier in camp he would have been the club’s opening day starter, but Jose Berrios will handle those duties instead, followed by Chris Bassitt and Yusei Kikuchi, manager John Schneider said last week.

Bowden Francis is tentatively slated to handle the finale of the season-opening four-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays, setting up Gausman for the series opener at Houston. He’d likely have 65-70 pitches for a start after Monday and the Blue Jays could progressively stretch him out from there.

“I think we can easily build up over the first two,” he said.

Gausman’s positive progression likely eliminates the need for another starter and helps further define the Blue Jays’ initial roll-out on the pitching side, although with closer Jordan Romano and set-up man Erik Swanson unlikely to be ready, they still have decisions to make.

They may very well opt to add length to support long man Mitch White as Gausman builds up and Francis transitions to the rotation.

The Toronto Blue Jays are gearing up for their final spring training game on Monday, and all eyes will be on starting pitcher Kevin Gausman. Gausman, who signed a five-year, $110 million deal with the Blue Jays in the offseason, is looking to secure his spot as the team’s opening day starter.

Gausman has had a strong showing in spring training, posting a 2.45 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched. His performance has impressed both fans and coaches alike, and there is a sense of excitement surrounding his potential as a top starter for the Blue Jays this season.

Manager Charlie Montoyo has expressed confidence in Gausman’s abilities, stating that he has been impressed with the pitcher’s work ethic and determination to succeed. Montoyo is looking forward to seeing Gausman take the mound on Monday and is hopeful that he will continue to build on his strong spring performance.

Gausman himself is excited for the opportunity to start the final spring game and is focused on making a strong impression. He has been working hard to fine-tune his pitches and build up his stamina in preparation for the regular season. Gausman is eager to prove himself as a reliable and consistent starter for the Blue Jays and is determined to make the most of this opportunity.

If Gausman can deliver a solid performance in Monday’s game, it is likely that he will be named the team’s opening day starter. This would be a significant milestone for Gausman, who has been looking to establish himself as a top pitcher in the league. With his talent and determination, Gausman has the potential to be a key player for the Blue Jays this season and help lead them to success.

Overall, Monday’s game will be an important test for Gausman as he looks to secure his spot as the team’s top starter. Fans will be eagerly watching to see how he performs and whether he can live up to the high expectations that have been set for him. With his talent and work ethic, Gausman has the potential to be a standout player for the Blue Jays this season and make a significant impact on the team’s success.
