Wagner to bat sixth and play second base in Blue Jays debut against Angels

After a scorching start with triple-A Buffalo, recording seven hits in his first three games, Will Wagner is moving to the big leagues.

The Toronto Blue Jays called up the infielder, who was acquired from the Houston Astros in the Yusei Kikuchi deal, on Monday. The 26-year-old will be active for Monday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels and wear No. 7, the team announced.

Wagner will bat sixth in his MLB debut and play second base as the Blue Jays face Angels right-hander Davis Daniel.

Infielder Luis De Los Santos was optioned to triple-A Buffalo to make room for Wagner.

Wagner, the son of the highly revered pitcher Billy Wagner, has continually put up solid numbers at the plate and should see decent playing time at the tail end of the season.

At the triple-A level in 2024, Wagner has slashed .315/.432/.444 over 77 games. He’s also recorded six home runs and three stolen bases.

Since the trade to the Blue Jays organization, Wagner has mostly played second base. However, he’s played all three non-shortstop infield positions in triple-A this year.

Monday night’s game against the Angels begins at 9:30 p.m. ET / 6:30 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

The Toronto Blue Jays are set to welcome their newest addition, infielder Wagner, to the lineup in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Angels. Wagner, who was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, is expected to bat sixth and play second base in his debut with the Blue Jays.

The 24-year-old infielder brings a solid defensive presence to the Blue Jays infield, with the ability to make plays both up the middle and on the corners. Wagner is known for his quick hands and strong arm, making him a valuable asset at second base.

Offensively, Wagner has shown flashes of potential at the plate. While he may not be a power hitter, he has a knack for getting on base and making things happen on the basepaths. His speed and ability to hit for average could provide a boost to the Blue Jays lineup.

Wagner’s debut against the Angels will be a test of his abilities at the major league level. Facing off against a tough pitching staff, including star pitcher Shohei Ohtani, Wagner will have to stay focused and make the most of his opportunities at the plate.

Blue Jays fans are excited to see what Wagner can bring to the team and how he will fit into the lineup. With his defensive skills and potential at the plate, Wagner could prove to be a valuable addition to the Blue Jays roster as they continue their push for a playoff spot.
