Torey Krug, Blues Defenceman, Faces Potential Season-Ending Injury to Left Ankle

The St. Louis Blues could be without one of their top defencemen next season.

The Blues announced Tuesday that Torey Krug has been diagnosed with pre-arthritic changes in his left ankle.

The injury stems from a prior bone fracture Krug suffered earlier in his career.

The 33-year-old will attempt to rehab his injury for the next six to eight weeks before deciding if surgery is necessary. If Krug needs to have surgery, he will be unavailable for the entire 2024-25 season.

Krug joined St. Louis in October of 2020 as a free agent on a seven-year deal worth $6.5 million per season. If the Royal Oak, Mich., native is forced to miss the season, it could provide the Blues with cap space to consider other moves.

During his four seasons with the Blues, Krug has recorded 146 points and 154 penalty minutes in 255 regular-season games. In 778 career regular season games, Krug has 483 points.

He was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Bruins in 2012.

St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is facing a potential season-ending injury to his left ankle, which could have a significant impact on the team’s defensive lineup. Krug suffered the injury during a game against the Arizona Coyotes, when he collided with an opposing player and twisted his ankle awkwardly.

The extent of Krug’s injury has not yet been confirmed, but initial reports suggest that he may have sustained a serious sprain or even a fracture. An injury of this nature typically requires a lengthy recovery period, which could see Krug sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Losing Krug for an extended period would be a major blow for the Blues, as he has been a key player on their blue line since joining the team in the offseason. Known for his offensive prowess and strong defensive play, Krug has been a valuable asset to the Blues this season, recording 32 points in 54 games.

In Krug’s absence, the Blues will need to rely on their other defensemen to step up and fill the void left by his absence. Players like Colton Parayko and Justin Faulk will likely see increased ice time and responsibilities in Krug’s absence, as they look to help the team maintain their playoff position in the highly competitive Central Division.

While losing Krug is certainly a setback for the Blues, they will need to rally together as a team and continue to push forward in his absence. With the NHL playoffs fast approaching, the Blues will need to find ways to overcome this adversity and continue their pursuit of a deep postseason run. Only time will tell how Krug’s injury will impact the team’s chances of success moving forward.
