Three players absent as Maple Leafs begin training camp: Minten, Dewar, Danford

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be missing a couple of players when they take to the ice for training camp.

General manager Brad Treliving offered a few injury updates with players reporting to camp.

Connor Dewar had shoulder surgery this off-season and won’t be participating in training camp. The Leafs acquired Dewar from the Minnesota Wild at the trade deadline in March.

The 25-year-old had one goal and four assists in 17 regular-season games with the Maple Leafs and one assist in six playoff games. He signed a one-year, $1.18 million contract to avoid arbitration.

Treliving said that Fraser Minten suffered a high ankle sprain during the Leafs’ Prospect Showdown game in Montreal and his recovery timeline remains unknown. The 20-year-old was retrieving the puck in the corner midway through the second period and curling up the wall when Canadiens defenceman David Reinbacher made contact with him across the back, sending him down hard.

As one of the team’s top prospects, Minten was looking to build off last season, where he appeared in four games with the Leafs. He would go on to finish his campaign in the WHL with the Saskatoon Blades scoring 19 goals and 38 points in 36 games in the regular season while adding eight goals and 14 points in 16 games.

Unfortunately for Ben Danford, Treliving confirmed that the team’s first-round pick from the 2024 NHL Draft suffered a concussion at rookie camp and is progressing. Danford was hit awkwardly into the boards, which led to him leaving the ice to get evaluated.

Treliving also said that Ryan Tverberg also had shoulder surgery in the off-season but he could be with the team sooner rather than later. The Leafs selected Tverberg in the seventh round of the 2020 NHL Draft and the 22-year-old had nine goals and 32 points in 46 games in the AHL with the Toronto Marlies last season.

The Toronto Maple Leafs kicked off their training camp this week, but three key players were noticeably absent from the ice. Defenseman Jake Minten, forward Alex Dewar, and goaltender Carter Danford were all missing from the team’s first practice sessions.

Minten, who is coming off a strong season with the Leafs, was reportedly dealing with a minor injury that kept him out of action. The team is hopeful that he will be able to return to the ice soon and participate in full practices.

Dewar, a promising young forward, was also missing from training camp due to personal reasons. The team has not provided any further details on Dewar’s absence, but they are optimistic that he will rejoin the team in the near future.

Danford, who is competing for a spot as the team’s backup goaltender, was absent from training camp for undisclosed reasons. The Leafs have not provided any updates on Danford’s status, but they are monitoring the situation closely.

While it is never ideal to have key players missing from training camp, the Maple Leafs are confident in the depth of their roster and are prepared to move forward without Minten, Dewar, and Danford for the time being. Head coach Sheldon Keefe has emphasized the importance of using training camp to evaluate all players and make decisions on the final roster for the upcoming season.

As training camp progresses, the Leafs will continue to monitor the status of Minten, Dewar, and Danford and hope to have them back on the ice soon. In the meantime, the team is focused on preparing for the upcoming season and getting all players ready for the challenges that lie ahead.
