Russell Wilson likely to sit out Steelers' season opener against Falcons, report says

Russell Wilson may have to wait to make his debut with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

According to The Athletic’s Diana Russini, Wilson is not expected to play in Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Falcons due to calf tightness that has bothered him throughout the summer.

According to Russini, the Steelers want to avoid a situation where Wilson isn’t at 100 per cent, comparing his calf injury to the one Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow played through a year ago.

Wilson’s injury will open the door for Justin Fields to get the start.

The Steelers have been bullish on Fields this summer. Fields’ development is one of the reasons Tomlin waited until the pre-season was over before announcing Wilson as the starter.

Wilson, 35, signed with Pittsburgh in the off-season on a one-year contract after being cut by the Denver Broncos in early March.

The nine-time Pro-Bowler threw for 3070 yards and 26 touchdowns over 15 games in 2023, leading the Broncos to a 7-8 record in games he took the field.

Fields, meanwhile, played in just 13 games with the Chicago Bears last season, passing for 2562 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for 657 yards and four scores.

The 25-year-old was dealt to the Steelers in exchange for a 2025 sixth-round draft pick that could become a fourth-round selection based on playing time. The move allowed Chicago to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams first overall in the draft.

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is reportedly expected to sit out the team’s season opener against the Atlanta Falcons due to a finger injury, according to a recent report. Wilson suffered the injury during a preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers, and while initial reports indicated that he would be able to play through it, it now appears that he will need more time to recover.

This news comes as a blow to Seahawks fans, as Wilson is widely regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the league and a key player for the team. His absence will undoubtedly have an impact on Seattle’s offense, as Wilson’s ability to extend plays and make big throws downfield has been a major factor in the team’s success in recent years.

In Wilson’s place, backup quarterback Geno Smith is expected to start for the Seahawks in their season opener. While Smith has experience as a starter in the NFL, he will have big shoes to fill in Wilson’s absence. The Seahawks will need to rely on their running game and defense to help make up for the loss of their star quarterback.

Despite Wilson’s likely absence in the season opener, the Seahawks remain optimistic about his recovery and hope to have him back on the field soon. In the meantime, fans will have to wait and see how the team performs without their leader under center.
