Philadelphia Phillies Acquire Right-Handed Pitcher Jose Cuas from Toronto Blue Jays via Waivers

Jose Cuas is on the move.

The Philadelphia Phillies claimed the right-hander off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, the teams announced Saturday.

Cuas started the year in the Cubs organization but was picked up by the Blue Jays on June 23. He pitched three innings with the Blue Jays and unfortunately made history during one of those, allowing three hits, three walks, zero strikeouts and hit two batters on three pitches.

In three appearances with the big club, Cuas owned a 13.50 ERA.

During his time with triple-A Buffalo, he posted a 6.89 ERA with seven walks and 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings.

The Philadelphia Phillies made a significant move to bolster their pitching staff by acquiring right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas from the Toronto Blue Jays via waivers. Cuas, a 25-year-old prospect, adds depth and potential to the Phillies’ bullpen as they continue to compete in the highly competitive National League East division.

Cuas, who was originally signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2014, has shown promise in the minor leagues with his strong fastball and developing secondary pitches. In 2019, he posted a 3.45 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 60 innings pitched across three levels of the Blue Jays’ farm system.

The Phillies were in need of additional pitching depth, especially after dealing with injuries to key members of their rotation. Cuas provides a young and talented arm that could potentially contribute at the major league level in the near future.

While Cuas may not be an immediate impact player for the Phillies, his addition gives them more options and flexibility in their pitching staff. He will likely start out in the minor leagues to further develop his skills and refine his command, but could be called up to the big leagues if needed.

Overall, the acquisition of Jose Cuas is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Phillies. They are adding a young pitcher with potential who could help strengthen their pitching staff both now and in the future. It will be interesting to see how Cuas progresses within the Phillies organization and if he can make an impact at the major league level.
