Natalie Spooner named MVP for 2024 season in PWHL Awards

Toronto’s Natalie Spooner was the big winner Tuesday after being named the first-ever recipient of the 2024 Billie Jean King MVP Award at the PWHL’s awards ceremony.

Spooner scored a league-high 20 goals and 27 points in 24 games during the regular season.

Toronto’s Troy Ryan took home the top-coach honour after guiding his team to a PWHL-best 47 points in the regular season and a record-setting 11-game win streak.

That wasn’t the only honour Toronto would receive, as Kristen Campbell was named the top goaltender after leading the PWHL with 16 wins and three shutouts.

Grace Zumwinkle’s impressive season, when she recorded the first-ever PWHL hat trick and 19 points in 24 games, earned her the league’s Rookie of the Year Award.

Erin Ambrose was named the league’s top defender after scoring 18 points in 24 games and 26:26 minutes per game during the regular season.

Montreal’s Maureen Murphy took home the 2024 Hockey For All Award for her volunteer work, which focused primarily on health and wellness. On top of that, Murphy dedicated close to 600 hours to both volunteer work and continuing her Law studies.

The PWHL also announced its First All-Star Team, which featured Alex Carpenter, Marie-Philip Poulin, Spooner, Ella Shelton, Ambrose and Kristen Campbell. The Second All-Star Team included Brianne Jenner, Grace Zumwinkle, Sarah Nurse, Renata Fast, Megan Keller and Aerin Frankel.

Alina Muller, Emma Maltais, Zumwinkle, Ashton Bell, Sophie Jaques and Emma Soderberg were named to the PWHL’s All-Rookie Team.
