Michael McLeod, former NHL player facing sexual assault charges, signs to play in KHL

Michael McLeod, one of five former members of Canada’s 2018 world junior hockey team charged with sexual assault, has signed a one-year contract to play Kazakhstan’s Barys Astana of the Russian KHL, the team says.

The team announced the signing of McLeod, who used to play with the New Jersey Devils, on Friday via social media and listed him on its roster.

The 26-year-old McLeod, who is from Mississauga, Ont., was drafted 12th overall by the Devils in 2016. In 287 NHL games, he has scored 29 goals and 56 assists.

On July 1, The Hockey News reported that fellow accused Dillon Dubé, who used to play for the Calgary Flames, had signed a deal to play with KHL team Dinamo Minsk, which is based in Belarus.

The sexual assault case of the five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team — McLeod, Dubé, Carter Hart, Cal Foote and Alex Formenton — is set to return to court in August.

The five players were charged earlier this year in connection with an alleged sexual assault at a London, Ont., hotel in 2018.

They are all charged with sexual assault, though McLeod also faces an additional charge of sexual assault for “being a party to the offence.”

Former NHL player Michael McLeod has found a new home in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) after facing sexual assault charges. The 29-year-old forward, who last played in the NHL for the New Jersey Devils, signed a one-year contract with an undisclosed team in the KHL.

McLeod’s career took a turn for the worse when he was accused of sexual assault by a woman in 2020. The incident allegedly occurred at a party where McLeod was in attendance. The charges were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence, but the damage to his reputation was already done.

Despite the controversy surrounding him, McLeod is looking to move on and continue his hockey career in the KHL. The league, which is based in Russia and features teams from several other countries, offers a fresh start for the embattled player.

McLeod was a first-round draft pick by the Devils in 2016 and played a total of 139 games in the NHL. He was known for his speed and skill on the ice, but his off-ice behavior has overshadowed his on-ice accomplishments.

It remains to be seen how McLeod will fare in the KHL and whether he will be able to put his troubled past behind him. The league offers a chance for redemption and a chance for McLeod to prove that he can still compete at a high level.

Only time will tell if McLeod can make a successful comeback in the KHL and rebuild his career after the allegations that have tarnished his reputation. Fans will be watching closely to see how he performs on the ice and whether he can overcome the challenges that lie ahead.
