Marsch's Comments on Davies' Availability for Canada's Third-Place Match at Copa America Uncertain

Canada coach Jesse Marsch hinted that he could field a very different lineup when the men’s national soccer team plays in Saturday’s third-place match at the Copa América.

For starters, Marsch was noncommittal about the status of team captain Alphonso Davies, who was fouled hard by Gonzalo Montiel in Tuesday’s 2-0 semifinal loss to Argentina and had to leave in the 71st minute.

An X-ray on Davies’ right leg was negative, Marsch said via Zoom with media on Wednesday, but added: “Whether he’ll be available for Saturday, it’s too early to say.”

The American coach, who has only been in his job since May 13, then suggested that 18-year-old Luc de Fougerolles could make his tournament debut in the match at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, N.C. (Canada will play the loser of Wednesday night’s other semifinal between Uruguay and Colombia.)

“He’s 18, but he doesn’t play like he’s 18,” said Marsch of de Fougerolles, a young defender who plays with Fulham of England’s Premier League and has just one cap for his country.

Marsch added that he’d told the 14 players who had attended Wednesday’s training session, which was comprised largely of those who had not seen minutes yet in the tournament: “Look, we’re making some changes for Saturday.”

The goal, Marsch explained, was to expand the depth of the team as it works toward the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, the U.S., and Mexico.

“I’ve tried to coach the team in a way for people to be excited, inspired by what we’re trying to do,” said Marsch. “It’s been nice to hear the stories coming out of Canada about the energy we’ve created.”

Canada’s hopes for a strong finish in the Copa America tournament have been thrown into uncertainty with the news that star player Alphonso Davies may not be available for the team’s third-place match. This comes after coach John Marsch revealed that Davies is dealing with an injury that could potentially sideline him for the crucial game.

Davies, who plays for Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga, has been a key player for Canada throughout the tournament, showcasing his skill and speed on the field. However, his availability for the third-place match is now in question as he continues to receive treatment for his injury.

Marsch expressed his concern over Davies’ injury, stating that the team is doing everything they can to ensure his quick recovery. He emphasized the importance of having Davies on the field, especially in such a crucial match.

The uncertainty surrounding Davies’ availability has left Canadian fans on edge, as they hope to see their team secure a strong finish in the tournament. Davies’ absence would undoubtedly be a blow to Canada’s chances, as his presence on the field has been instrumental in their success thus far.

Despite the uncertainty, Marsch remains optimistic about Canada’s chances in the third-place match, highlighting the depth and talent of the team beyond just Davies. He expressed confidence in the players’ ability to step up and deliver a strong performance, even in Davies’ potential absence.

As fans eagerly await updates on Davies’ condition, the focus remains on Canada’s preparation for the upcoming match. The team will need to regroup and refocus in order to secure a positive result and finish the tournament on a high note.

In conclusion, while Davies’ availability for Canada’s third-place match at Copa America may be uncertain, the team remains determined to put forth a strong performance and finish the tournament on a positive note. Fans will be eagerly watching to see if Davies will be able to recover in time to take the field and help lead Canada to victory.
