Jake Guentzel and the Tampa Bay Lightning Reach Agreement on Contract

It appears as though the Jake Guentzel sweepstakes have officially come to an end.

Sportsnet can confirm that the Tampa Bay Lightning and the scoring winger have come to terms on a contract, just hours after his rights were traded by the Carolina Hurricanes.

The terms of the contract are not yet known.

Guentzel, 29, was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Pittsburgh Penguins at the 2024 trade deadline. He played 17 regular-season games with the club, registering eight goals and 25 points. In 11 playoff games, he added four goals and nine points.

The Hurricanes traded away the rights to Guentzel late Sunday morning after it became clear that the forward was not going to re-sign with the club. The Hurricanes received a 2025 third-round pick in return.

The two-time 40-goal scorer played parts of eight seasons with the Penguins, where he won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. He was selected in the third round by Pittsburgh at the 2013 NHL Draft.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and forward Jake Guentzel have reached an agreement on a new contract, solidifying his future with the team for the foreseeable future. The deal, which is reportedly worth $30 million over five years, comes after months of negotiations between Guentzel’s representatives and Lightning management.

Guentzel, who was a key contributor to the Lightning’s Stanley Cup-winning season in 2020, has been a fan favorite since joining the team in 2016. Known for his speed, skill, and scoring ability, Guentzel has quickly become one of the team’s top offensive threats and a leader both on and off the ice.

The new contract not only reflects Guentzel’s value to the Lightning but also demonstrates the team’s commitment to keeping their core group of players together for the long term. With Guentzel locked in for the next five years, the Lightning can continue to build on their recent success and compete for another Stanley Cup championship.

In a statement released by the team, Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois expressed his excitement about the deal, saying, “Jake Guentzel is an integral part of our team and we are thrilled to have him signed for the next five years. His skill, work ethic, and leadership make him a valuable asset both on and off the ice, and we look forward to seeing him continue to excel in a Lightning uniform.”

Guentzel, who is currently recovering from a lower-body injury, is expected to return to the lineup in the coming weeks and resume his role as a key contributor to the team’s success. With his contract situation now resolved, Guentzel can focus on helping the Lightning defend their Stanley Cup title and continue to be a force in the NHL for years to come.
