German Marquez of the Rockies placed on Injured List after first start following Tommy John surgery

DENVER — Colorado Rockies right-hander German Marquez was placed on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation, eight days after his first major league start since Tommy John surgery.

Marquez had the elbow operation on May 12, 2023. He returned on July 14, when he started and allowed three runs in four innings in the Rockies’ 8-5 win over the New York Mets.

After the All-Star break, Marquez felt tightness in his forearm during a bullpen session.

“German’s arm just didn’t bounce back from the start in New York,” Colorado manager Bud Black said. “It stems from his last (rehab) game in Hartford and his game in New York, where his pitch count got up and the intensity was raised.”

Marquez, who threw 70 pitches against the Mets, will be shut down for several days before he resumes throwing.

“It’s probably the right thing to do to put him on the injured list,” Black said. “He was a little concerned about how he felt. He was a little bit tentative in his side (session) on Saturday. Better safe than sorry. Hopefully, just a couple of weeks.”

Marquez is 65-56 in nine major league seasons, all with Colorado. He made four starts in 2023 before having surgery.

Also Monday, Black said first baseman/outfielder Kris Bryant is likely to be activated from the injured list Tuesday. Bryant has been sidelined since June 2 with rib and oblique injuries. The former NL MVP is batting .186 with two homers in 24 games.

Colorado Rockies pitcher German Marquez has been placed on the Injured List after experiencing discomfort in his throwing arm during his first start following Tommy John surgery. The right-hander underwent the procedure last year and was making his highly anticipated return to the mound.

Marquez, who is considered one of the Rockies’ top pitchers, had been progressing well in his rehab and was expected to be a key contributor to the team’s rotation this season. However, the setback is a disappointing development for both Marquez and the Rockies organization.

Tommy John surgery is a common procedure for pitchers who have suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament in their elbow. The surgery involves replacing the damaged ligament with a tendon from elsewhere in the body, typically the forearm or hamstring. Recovery from Tommy John surgery can be a long and arduous process, with pitchers typically needing at least a year to fully regain their strength and form.

It is not uncommon for pitchers to experience setbacks during their recovery from Tommy John surgery, as the rehabilitation process is both physically and mentally demanding. The Rockies will be closely monitoring Marquez’s progress and working with him to ensure that he is able to return to the mound healthy and strong.

In the meantime, the Rockies will need to rely on their other pitchers to step up in Marquez’s absence. The team will be looking to veterans like Jon Gray and Kyle Freeland to anchor the rotation and provide stability on the mound.

Despite this setback, Marquez remains optimistic about his recovery and is determined to make a successful comeback. The Rockies and their fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to the mound and hoping for a speedy recovery for the talented young pitcher.
