Flames and Blue Jackets to host candlelight vigils in memory of Gaudreau brothers

Both the Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets announced Tuesday that they will be holding candlelight vigils to honour the lives of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau after the brothers were killed on Thursday night.

The events are both scheduled for Wednesday evening.

Calgary’s will take place at 8 p.m. MT / 10 p.m. ET at the west stairs of the Scotiabank Saddledome, where a memorial to the Gaudreaus currently sits. The Flames announced that the event is expected to be 45 minutes, including speakers from the organization and a 13-minute vigil for Johnny and Matthew.

For those unable to attend, Calgary will stream the candlelight vigil on the Flames website, app and on the team’s social media channels.

Fans in Columbus on Friday made a memorial out of hockey sticks, flowers and other mementos outside the Blue Jackets’ downtown arena. Flames fans in Calgary, Alberta, also paid tribute with messages and Gaudreau’s No. 13 written in chalk on the ground outside the Saddledome.

The Blue Jackets said fans are invited to their candlelight vigil on Wednesday night outside Nationwide Arena, which will include brief remarks from members of the organization as well as 13 minutes, 21 seconds of silent remembrance for the jersey numbers worn by Johnny and Matthew.

Columbus’ vigil will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET / 5:30 p.m. MT.

The hockey community is coming together to honor the memory of the Gaudreau brothers, who tragically lost their lives in a car accident last week. Both the Calgary Flames and the Columbus Blue Jackets have announced that they will be hosting candlelight vigils in remembrance of the young men.

The Gaudreau brothers, both avid hockey fans, were well-known in their respective communities for their love of the game and their infectious enthusiasm. Their untimely passing has left a void in the hearts of many, and the candlelight vigils are a way for fans, players, and staff to come together to mourn their loss and celebrate their lives.

The Calgary Flames will be hosting their vigil outside the Scotiabank Saddledome on Friday evening. Fans are encouraged to bring candles, flowers, and mementos to create a memorial for the Gaudreau brothers. There will also be a moment of silence before the Flames’ game against the Edmonton Oilers in honor of the brothers.

The Columbus Blue Jackets will be holding their vigil outside Nationwide Arena on Saturday evening. Fans are invited to gather to pay their respects and share memories of the Gaudreau brothers. The Blue Jackets players and staff will also be in attendance to show their support for the family and friends of the young men.

Both vigils are open to the public, and all are welcome to attend. The hockey community is a tight-knit family, and events like these serve as a reminder of the bonds that unite us all. The Gaudreau brothers may no longer be with us, but their spirit lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved them.
