As its namesake suggests, it’s officially time for the Saddledome to ride off into the sunset.
The City of Calgary and Calgary Sports and Entertainment revealed design plans and digital renderings for the new event centre on Monday.
They also revealed a name for the building, calling it Scotia Place, according to Calgary Sports and Entertainment president Robert Hayes.
According to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, the hope is that construction will be completed in 2027, in time for the Flames to play there in the 2027-28 season. It will have a capacity of 18,400.
Though perhaps not as on the nose as the Saddledome, the new arena represents the Flames in its own way with the creation of what organizers are calling “The Cauldron,” an intricately designed roof made to look like fire.
Scotia Place and the surrounding arena district will also include a community rink, a parkade and an indoor and outdoor event plaza.
The arena will be located two blocks north of Calgary’s current home, the Scotiabank Saddledome. The signature Calgary landmark has been the Flames’ home since it was built in 1983.
