Canada’s Denis Shapovalov fell in the third round of Wimbledon after losing 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to Ben Shelton of the United States on Saturday.
Play was suspended Friday due to rain with Shelton leading 3-2 in the opening set.
Shapovalov, from Richmond Hill, Ont., finished with six aces and won 73 per cent on first serve but also committed 13 double faults.
The No. 14 seed Shelton had seven aces with four double faults and converted five of 16 break points.
Shelton will face top-seed Jannik Sinner of Italy in the Round of 16.
In women’s doubles action, Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., also had their matches pushed to Saturday.
Dabrowski and New Zealand’s Erin Routliffe were tied 1-1 in the first set against Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova and Irina Khromacheva when play was suspended. Fernandez and Japan’s Ena Shibahara lost their opening set 6-2 to Estonia’s Ingrid Neel and Norway’s Ulrikke Eikeri before the suspension of play.
