Daulton Varsho of the Blue Jays dealing with lower back tightness, status day-to-day

Amid a five-game losing streak, multiple injuries and fading chances of a post-season spot, the Toronto Blue Jays don’t need any more bad news.

But that’s just what they got in the ninth inning of Saturday’s 6-3 loss to Cleveland Guardians when outfielder Daulton Varsho was unable to run down the line after hitting a ground ball, grabbing his back in pain.

Varsho was accompanied off the field by Blue Jays manager John Schneider and trainer Jose Ministral.

The Blue Jays called the injury left lower back tightness after the game, calling the 27-year-old day-to-day.

The at-bat was Varsho’s fourth of the game, where he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout. He has been one of Toronto’s top contributors this season, leading the team in WAR, home runs and triples, and is tied for team lead in RBI and stolen bases.

Varsho has also been one of the top defenders in baseball, leading all outfielders in defensive runs saved.

The Blue Jays will look to snap their five-game losing streak on Sunday against Cleveland and starter Triston McKenzie. You can catch the game on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+ at 1:40 p.m. ET / 10:40 a.m. PT.

Daulton Varsho, the talented catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, is currently dealing with lower back tightness that has put his status for upcoming games in question. The 25-year-old has been a key player for the Blue Jays this season, showcasing his skills both behind the plate and at the plate.

Varsho first started experiencing discomfort in his lower back during a recent game against the New York Yankees. He was seen stretching and trying to work out the tightness during the game, but ultimately had to be removed from the lineup. Since then, he has been undergoing treatment and rest in an effort to alleviate the issue.

Lower back tightness can be a common ailment for athletes, especially those who play high-impact sports like baseball. The repetitive motions involved in catching and hitting can put strain on the muscles and joints in the lower back, leading to tightness and discomfort. It is important for players like Varsho to listen to their bodies and take the necessary steps to address any issues before they become more serious.

The Blue Jays medical staff is closely monitoring Varsho’s condition and working with him to develop a treatment plan that will allow him to return to the field as soon as possible. In the meantime, Varsho’s status for upcoming games will be evaluated on a day-to-day basis.

While it is always concerning when a key player like Varsho is dealing with an injury, the Blue Jays have depth at the catcher position and will be able to adjust their lineup accordingly. However, Varsho’s presence both on defense and offense will be missed if he is unable to play.

Fans of the Blue Jays will be eagerly awaiting updates on Varsho’s condition and hoping for a speedy recovery. In the meantime, they can take comfort in knowing that Varsho is in good hands with the team’s medical staff and will be back on the field as soon as he is able.
