Croatian dual national Niko Sigur files to switch representation to Canada: Report

Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has another talented youngster joining his squad.

On Wednesday, dual national midfielder Niko Sigur filed a one-time switch to change his international eligibility from Croatia to Canada, The Athletic‘s Joshua Kloke reports.

The 20-year-old is supposedly eyeing the fall international windows to make his Les Rouges debut. Despite a minor injury, Sigur will be available for selection during Canada’s friendlies against Mexico and the United States on Sept. 7 and 10, and again against Panama on Oct. 15 in Toronto.

“It was an honour to represent Croatia, which is a football superpower and which is my family’s homeland,” Sigur said in a X post shared by the Croatian Football Federation. “But with the passage of time I felt that I wanted to represent the country where I grew up and started my football career, Canada.”

Sigur, a crafty, quick and technical defensive midfielder, was born in Burnaby, B.C. He came through the Vancouver Whitecaps FC Academy, played for the York University Lions, and went semi-professional with Vaughan Azzurri before moving to Slovenia.

In May 2023, Sigur chose to represent Croatia despite former Canada head coach John Herdman trying to get him to play for Les Rouges.

Sigur played the last two campaigns in Croatia with Hajduk Split and made nine appearances for Croatia’s Under-21 team.

Croatian dual national Niko Sigur has reportedly filed to switch his representation to Canada, according to recent reports. The talented young athlete, who holds citizenship in both Croatia and Canada, has made the decision to represent the Canadian national team moving forward.

Sigur, who is known for his impressive skills on the field, has been a rising star in the world of soccer. With his dual nationality, he had the option to choose which country to represent at the international level. After careful consideration, he has decided to switch his allegiance to Canada.

This move could have significant implications for both Sigur and the Canadian national team. His presence could help bolster the team’s performance and potentially lead to greater success on the international stage.

Furthermore, Sigur’s decision to switch representation highlights the growing appeal of Canadian soccer on the global stage. With an increasing number of talented players choosing to represent Canada, the country’s national team is poised to make a strong impact in future competitions.

Overall, Niko Sigur’s decision to switch representation to Canada is an exciting development for both the player and the Canadian national team. It will be interesting to see how this move impacts his career and the team’s performance in upcoming matches.
