Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano starts throwing program with no set return date

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano has begun a throwing progression at the team’s training complex in Dunedin, Fla., according to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.

Romano has been throwing on flat ground out to 60 feet. Toronto also says that there isn’t a timetable for Romano to get back on a mound.

The 31-year-old had surgery to repair an impingement in his right elbow on July 3. The Blue Jays intended to have him back with the club before the end of the season.

As Zwelling notes, the Blue Jays only have 22 games remaining on their schedule, so Romano has limited time to get in shape to pitch.

Romano had a difficult beginning to his season, starting the year on the injured list after receiving an anti-inflammatory injection in spring training. He returned on April 16 but went back on the IL before getting another injection and undergoing the surgery.

The Markham, Ont. native struggled to a 6.59 ERA over 13.2 innings when he managed to take the mound for Toronto. He picked up eight saves but couldn’t keep the ball in the yard, allowing four home runs.

Toronto Blue Jays closer Jordan Romano has started a throwing program as he works his way back from a right ulnar neuritis injury. The 28-year-old right-hander has been sidelined since August 21, but there is no set return date for him yet.

Romano began his throwing program on Monday, and the team is encouraged by his progress so far. He has been throwing from 60 feet and will gradually increase the distance as he builds up arm strength. The Blue Jays are taking a cautious approach with Romano to ensure that he is fully healthy before he returns to the mound.

Romano has been a key part of the Blue Jays bullpen this season, posting a 2.74 ERA with 10 saves in 45 appearances. His absence has been felt by the team, but they have managed to stay in the playoff race despite his injury.

The Blue Jays will continue to monitor Romano’s progress and will not rush him back before he is ready. They have plenty of depth in their bullpen to help fill the void in the meantime, but getting Romano back healthy and effective will be crucial for their postseason hopes.

In the meantime, fans will have to wait patiently for Romano’s return and hope that he can regain his form once he is back on the mound. The Blue Jays will continue to provide updates on his status as he progresses through his throwing program.
