Blue Jays acquire RHP Jose Cuas from Cubs through waivers

The Blue Jays claimed right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas off waivers from the Chicago Cubs on Sunday and assigned him to triple-A Buffalo.

Cuas has a 7.43 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 13.1 innings in nine appearances as a reliever this season. He was designated for assignment on June 16.

The 29-year-old was originally selected by Toronto in the 40th round of the 2012 draft, but he did not sign with the team. Instead, Cuas was drafted again by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 11th round in 2015.

After converting from an infielder to a pitcher, Cuas made his major-league debut with the Kansas City Royals in 2022. He was traded to the Cubs in exchange for outfielder Nelson Velazquez on July 31, 2023.

Cuas has a career 4.26 ERA and 119 strikeouts over three seasons with the Royals and Cubs.

The Toronto Blue Jays have made a move to bolster their pitching staff by acquiring right-handed pitcher Jose Cuas from the Chicago Cubs through waivers. Cuas, a 24-year-old prospect, adds depth to the Blue Jays’ bullpen and provides them with another arm to potentially contribute at the major league level.

Cuas was originally signed by the Cubs as an international free agent out of the Dominican Republic in 2014. He has spent the past few seasons working his way through the Cubs’ minor league system, showing promise as a potential major league pitcher. In 2021, Cuas posted a 3.86 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 35 innings across three minor league levels.

The Blue Jays are hoping that Cuas can continue to develop and potentially make an impact at the major league level in the near future. With injuries and inconsistencies plaguing their pitching staff this season, adding a young arm like Cuas provides them with some much-needed depth and flexibility.

It’s worth noting that Cuas will need to be added to the Blue Jays’ 40-man roster, which could potentially lead to another roster move in the near future. However, the Blue Jays clearly see enough potential in Cuas to take a chance on him and see if he can help shore up their pitching staff down the stretch.

Overall, the acquisition of Jose Cuas from the Cubs through waivers is a low-risk, high-reward move for the Blue Jays. If Cuas can continue to develop and reach his potential, he could end up being a valuable asset for Toronto both now and in the future. Only time will tell how this move will ultimately pan out, but it’s clear that the Blue Jays are willing to take a chance on Cuas and see what he can bring to the table.
