Ben Danford signs entry-level deal with Maple Leafs

The Toronto Maple Leafs have put pen to paper on a deal with their top selection from the 2024 NHL Draft.

Ben Danford agreed to a three-year entry-level contract Friday.

The team selected Oshawa Generals defenceman Ben Danford with their 31st-overall pick, acquired in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks in exchange for the 23rd pick. Toronto also acquired pick No. 58 in the deal.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound defenceman played in 64 games for the Generals last season, scoring one goal and 33 points, adding four more goals and 10 points in 21 playoff games.

A Madoc, Ont. native, Danford is relishing the opportunity to play for his childhood team.

“It’s super special,” Danford said after being selected. “Growing up, I’ve been a lifelong, die-hard Leafs fan, and to get drafted by them, it means that much more, so I can’t wait to get started.”

Danford took the opportunity to tell the Maple Leafs fan base what they can expect from their new prospect.

“I think the main thing is just a competitive guy,” he added. “A guy that does anything for the team to win: block shots, can play a two-way game, defence-first, and can contribute offensively as well.”

Danford is the first defenceman the Maple Leafs have drafted in the first round since Rasmus Sandin in 2018.

Danford was the 69th-ranked prospect in Jason Bukala’s pre-draft rankings.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially signed defenseman Ben Danford to an entry-level contract, adding depth to their defensive lineup. The 22-year-old Danford, who was originally drafted by the Maple Leafs in the seventh round of the 2017 NHL Draft, has spent the past four seasons playing college hockey at St. Lawrence University.

Danford is known for his strong defensive play and physicality on the ice. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing in at 205 pounds, he is a solid presence in front of the net and is not afraid to throw his body around to make plays. His size and strength make him a valuable asset in clearing the crease and battling for puck possession along the boards.

During his time at St. Lawrence University, Danford showed steady improvement in his game, becoming a reliable defenseman for the team. In his senior season, he recorded 12 points in 34 games, showcasing his ability to contribute offensively as well. His strong work ethic and dedication to improving his skills have caught the attention of the Maple Leafs organization, leading to his signing of an entry-level deal.

With the Maple Leafs currently battling for a playoff spot in the competitive North Division, Danford’s addition to the roster provides them with added depth on defense. He will have the opportunity to learn from experienced players on the team and continue to develop his game at the professional level.

Maple Leafs fans can look forward to seeing Danford in action as he competes for a spot in the lineup and strives to make an impact on the team. His signing is a promising move for the organization as they aim to strengthen their defensive core and compete for a playoff spot in the upcoming season.
