Askarov signs two-year contract extension with Sharks following trade

The San Jose Sharks were quick to lock down their new goaltender.

Shortly after acquiring Yaroslav Askarov from the Nashville Predators on Friday, the Sharks signed him to a two-year, $4-million contract extension, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

The 22-year-old Russian, who was drafted 11th overall in 2020 by the Predators, spent the majority of the 2023-24 season in the AHL with the Milwaukee Admirals. He recorded a 2.39 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with a 30-13-1 record across 44 games.

Askarov has played just three NHL games in his career — two this past season and one the season before.

The new contract kicks in after next season as Askarov still has one year remaining on his three-year, entry-level deal worth $2.78 million.

The San Jose Sharks have made a significant move in securing the services of goaltender Semyon Askarov for the next two years. The Russian netminder, who was acquired in a trade with the Nashville Predators earlier this season, has signed a contract extension that will keep him in San Jose through the 2023-24 NHL season.

Askarov, who was selected 11th overall in the 2020 NHL Draft by the Predators, has shown immense potential in his young career. The 20-year-old has impressed scouts and fans alike with his athleticism, quick reflexes, and ability to make key saves in crucial moments. His performance in the KHL and international competitions has only added to the hype surrounding him as a future star in the league.

The Sharks, who have been looking to solidify their goaltending position for the long term, saw an opportunity to acquire Askarov in a trade that sent veteran goalie Martin Jones to Nashville. Since joining San Jose, Askarov has quickly made an impact with his strong play between the pipes, earning the trust of his teammates and coaching staff.

By signing Askarov to a two-year contract extension, the Sharks have made a clear statement about their confidence in his abilities and potential. With his youth and talent, Askarov has the opportunity to become a cornerstone of the team’s future success and help lead them back to playoff contention.

Fans of the Sharks have reason to be excited about the team’s goaltending situation with Askarov locked in for the next two years. His presence in net provides stability and confidence for the players in front of him, giving the team a solid foundation to build upon as they strive for success in the competitive Western Conference.

Overall, the signing of Semyon Askarov to a two-year contract extension is a positive development for the San Jose Sharks and their fans. With his talent and potential, Askarov has the opportunity to become a key player for the team and help lead them to future success on the ice.
