Analysis of Five Intriguing Matchups from the Champions League Draw

The UEFA Champions League enters a new chapter during the 2024-25 campaign with the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 36 teams. There’s also a new format this season.

Gone is the traditional group stage. Instead, all 36 clubs will compete in a single-table format with the top eight sides at the end of the first round automatically advancing to the round of 16.

Teams finishing ninth to 24th in the standings will be paired off in a series of two-legged playoffs with the eight winners also moving on to the knockout round. Teams that finished 25th or lower will be eliminated and will not move over to the UEFA Europa League.

Each team will play eight different opponents in eight matches (four home, four away) in the first round. Thursday’s draw, held by UEFA at Grimaldi Forum in Monaco, determined the first-round matches.

The fixture list will be announced on Aug. 31. But we already know the first round will run from Sept. 17 to Jan. 29, 2025, followed by the playoffs (Feb. 11-19). The round of 16 kicks off on March 4. This year’s final is slated for May 31 in Munich.

Here’s a look at five of the more interesting first-round matchups:

Real Madrid vs. Liverpool

Real Madrid, the reigning European champion, will face a pair of Italian teams in AC Milan and Atalanta, Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg, French sides Lille and Brest, and Borussia Dortmund and VfB Stuttgart from the Bundesliga.

But their toughest challenge comes in the form of a visit to Anfield, where Real will tangle with Liverpool in a rematch of the 2022 final. Real also got the better of Liverpool in the round of 16 during the following season, convincingly winning the series 6-2 on aggregate. Carlo Ancelotti’s men were sensational in a 5-2 victory at Anfield, a result that no doubt still rankles the Reds, who’ll be out for revenge.

Manchester City vs. Inter Milan

The draw was rather kind to Manchester City, as it was pooled against Slovan Bratislava, Sparta Prague, Sporting CP, Feyenoord and Club Brugge. Tougher challenges await the Blues in the form of Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain.

Their most tantalizing matchup is a home contest against Inter Milan in a battle of the reigning English and Italian league champions, as well as a rematch of the Champions League 2023 final. The game also pits two of the world’s most dangerous forwards against each other in Norwegian international Erling Haaland and Argentina’s Lautaro Martínez.

Bayern Munich vs. FC Barcelona

Alphonso Davies has been linked with a transfer move to Real Madrid for the longest time. But it doesn’t look like the Edmonton star, regarded as one of the best left fullbacks in the world, will join Los Blancos before the summer transfer window closes on Saturday.

Still, the Canadian international will get a taste of what it’s like to go up against one of the biggest clubs in Spain when Bayern Munich pays a visit to Catalonia to face FC Barcelona. Davies is in the final year of his contract, which means he’ll be a free agent at the end of this season. A strong showing at Camp Nou wouldn’t escape the attention of Real Madrid, who have always been keen to sign players who have previously tormented their bitter rivals.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Arsenal

One of the unique features of the Champions League’s new format is that it offers up more marquee matches in the first round. Paris Saint-Germain discovered this to its peril.

Not only does the French powerhouse have to play three of the biggest clubs in Europe in Manchester City (home), Bayern Munich (away) and Atletico Madrid (home), it faces a tricky road test versus Arsenal, who have finished runners-up in the English Premier League each of the last two seasons. Arsenal is primed for a breakout campaign in Europe under wily manager Mikel Arteta.

Juventus vs. Aston Villa

On paper, this matchup in Turin between the Italian giants and the Birmingham-based club doesn’t look all that intriguing.

But the match will see outstanding Brazilian midfielder Douglas Luiz face Villa for the first time since his €50-million transfer fee to Juventus during the summer transfer window.

Luiz is coming off a sensational 2023-24 campaign in which he scored 10 goals and tallied 10 assists in all competitions, and played a huge role in helping Villa finish fourth in the Premier League, reach the semifinals of the UEFA Conference League, and qualify for Europe’s top club competition for the first time since 1982-83.
