Addison Barger recalled by Blue Jays, Daniel Vogelbach designated for assignment

The Toronto Blue Jays have recalled Addison Barger from triple-A Buffalo.

To make room for Barger, designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach has been designated for assignment.

In his first stint with the team this season, Barger went 1-for-18 in five games. In 50 games with the Buffalo Bisons, the Blue Jays’ No. 6-ranked prospect is hitting .256/.380/.467 with eight home runs and 34 RBI.

Vogelbach was used primarily as a pinch-hitter, hitting .186/.278/.300 with one home run in 79 plate appearances across 31 games this season.

The Blue Jays take on the Cleveland Guardians Friday, with coverage beginning at 7 p.m. ET / 4 p.m. PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

The Toronto Blue Jays made a roster move on Monday, recalling infielder Addison Barger from Triple-A Buffalo and designating first baseman Daniel Vogelbach for assignment.

Barger, a 21-year-old prospect, has been tearing it up in the minor leagues this season. In 50 games with Buffalo, he has posted a .315 batting average with six home runs and 29 RBIs. He has also shown great defensive skills at shortstop and second base, making him a versatile option for the Blue Jays.

Vogelbach, on the other hand, has struggled at the plate this season. In 47 games with the Blue Jays, he has hit just .217 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. With the emergence of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. as the team’s everyday first baseman, Vogelbach became expendable.

The decision to recall Barger and designate Vogelbach for assignment shows that the Blue Jays are committed to giving their young prospects a chance to prove themselves at the major league level. Barger will provide depth in the infield and could potentially earn a more permanent spot on the roster if he continues to perform well.

As for Vogelbach, he will now go through waivers, where other teams will have the opportunity to claim him. If he goes unclaimed, he could be outrighted to the minor leagues or released by the Blue Jays.

Overall, this roster move signifies the Blue Jays’ commitment to developing their young talent and making moves that they believe will benefit the team in the long run. Only time will tell if Barger can make an impact at the major league level and if Vogelbach will find a new home in the MLB.
