Imanaga and bullpen pitch no-hitter, Merrill sets Padres record

On April 25, 2021, history was made in Major League Baseball as Yu Darvish, Keone Kela, Tim Hill, and Emilio Pagán combined to pitch a no-hitter for the San Diego Padres against the Texas Rangers. This marked the first time in MLB history that a Japanese-born pitcher (Darvish) was involved in a no-hitter.

The Padres’ bullpen has been a strength for the team this season, with pitchers like Darvish, Kela, Hill, and Pagán all contributing to the team’s success. However, it was Taylor Williams who was initially credited with the no-hitter before it was changed to a combined effort by MLB.

In addition to the no-hitter, Padres outfielder Tommy Pham hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the team an early lead. Jake Cronenworth also had a strong game, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Padres’ no-hitter was not the only highlight of the day for the team, as Eric Hosmer hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to help lead the Padres to a 6-0 victory over the Rangers.

Meanwhile, Padres pitcher Nick Ramirez set a team record by striking out eight consecutive batters in relief during the game. Ramirez’s performance was a bright spot for the Padres, who have been dealing with injuries to their pitching staff this season.

Overall, it was a historic day for the Padres as they made history with their no-hitter and saw several standout performances from their players. The team will look to build on this momentum as they continue their quest for a playoff spot in the highly competitive National League West division.
