The San Francisco Giants have signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a six-year contract extension, the team announced Thursday night.
According to reports, the deal begins in 2025 and is worth $151 million, with Chapman earning $25 million per year through 2030, plus a $1 million signing bonus.
Chapman will make an annual donation of $125,000 to the Giants Community Fund each season through 2030, the Giants also announced.
The Giants signed Chapman to a one-year deal with options late in the off-season after larger free-agent contracts didn’t materialize. That contract paid Chapman $18 million this season and included player options in 2025 and 2026. Those options have been waived and replaced by the new extension.
Chapman, 31, is one of baseball’s best defensive infielders. In eight seasons he has earned four Gold Gloves and two Platinum Gloves at third base. At the dish, Chapman hits for power and has 177 home runs and 241 doubles in 1,004 games.
This season, Chapman has started 135 of San Francisco’s 140 games and he leads the team in most offensive categories including home runs (22), runs scored (90), doubles (13), hits (126) and RBI (69). Additionally, he leads all third basemen this season with 18 defensive runs saved.
A native of southern California, Chapman began his career with the Oakland Athletics. After five years in Oakland, he was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays ahead of the 2022 season and helped Toronto reach the playoffs twice before joining the Giants.
