Let the weirdness begin.
Boston Red Sox catcher Danny Jansen is set to become the first MLB player to play for two different teams on Monday when the Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays play the remainder of a postponed game from June 2.
The absurdity of the historic day has already begun, in fact, as over an hour before first pitch, Jansen was already up on the Fenway Park scoreboard … but as a member of the Blue Jays.
The former Blue Jays catcher has technically been frozen in time in the batter’s box for 61 days as he was in the middle of a second-inning at-bat when the game was officially postponed due to rain.
But since the Blue Jays traded Jansen to the Red Sox, Toronto will now have to pinch-hit for Jansen when the game resumes.
The Red Sox will also need a new man behind the plate as Reese McGuire, who was catching for the Red Sox at the time, is currently with Boston’s triple-A team. Thankfully, the Red Sox have just the man for the job, as Jansen is in the lineup and will make MLB history when he takes over catching duties.
Everyone on Toronto and Boston’s current 26-man roster will be eligible to play Monday, even if they weren’t active two months ago.
