Blue Jays acquire Easton Lucas from Tigers via waivers and assign him to triple-A option

The Toronto Blue Jays have claimed left-hander Easton Lucas off waivers from the Detroit Tigers.

Toronto optioned Lucas to triple-A Buffalo and transferred Alek Manoah to the 60-day injured list.

Lucas appeared in six games between the Tigers and Oakland Athletics this season. He also pitched in 32 games in triple-A going 3-1 with a 3.31 ERA.

The Miami Marlins selected Lucas in the 14th round of the 2019 draft out of Pepperdine University.

Lucas has posted a 9.22 ERA over 12 career MLB games and a 3.95 mark over 140 minor-league appearances.

The Toronto Blue Jays made a move to bolster their pitching depth by acquiring left-handed pitcher Easton Lucas from the Detroit Tigers via waivers. The 24-year-old southpaw had been designated for assignment by the Tigers earlier in the week, making him available for the Blue Jays to claim.

Lucas, a former fourth-round draft pick out of Pepperdine University, has shown promise in the minor leagues with his ability to generate strikeouts and induce ground balls. In 2019, he posted a 3.68 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 124 innings across three levels of the Tigers’ farm system.

Upon acquiring Lucas, the Blue Jays wasted no time in assigning him to their triple-A affiliate, the Buffalo Bisons. This move gives Lucas an opportunity to continue developing his skills against more advanced competition while providing the Blue Jays with another arm to call upon should they need reinforcements at the major league level.

The addition of Lucas adds to the Blue Jays’ growing stable of young pitching talent, which includes top prospects like Nate Pearson and Alek Manoah. With a strong core of young arms and a potent lineup led by stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, the Blue Jays are poised to be contenders in the competitive American League East.

Overall, the acquisition of Easton Lucas represents a low-risk, high-reward move for the Blue Jays as they look to strengthen their pitching staff for the stretch run of the season. Fans will be eager to see how Lucas performs in triple-A and whether he can eventually make an impact at the major league level for Toronto.
