Chris Jones named new defensive co-ordinator for Tiger-Cats, replacing Mark Washington

Chris Jones wasn’t out of work long.

Fired as general manager/head coach of the Edmonton Elks last month, Jones is heading east to become the senior defensive assistant of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

The struggling Ticats (2-8) fired Mark Washington on Monday in the aftermath of Saturday’s 47-22 loss to Edmonton, and named Jones as his replacement.

Jones and Ticats head coach Scott Milanovich previously worked together in Toronto and Montreal.

Jones’ second stint as Edmonton’s head coach was a disaster. The well-travelled coach went 8-33 after being rehired prior to the start of the 2022 season.

The Elks are 3-2 under interim head coach Jarious Jackson following an 0-5 start under Jones.

Jones won a Grey Cup as head coach of Edmonton in 2015 and has captured three more CFL titles as a defensive co-ordinator or assistant including one with Milanovich in 2012.

Washington had been Hamilton’s defensive co-ordinator since 2019 and maintained the title after the team brought in Milanovich as head coach prior to this season.

The Ticats have the worst record and defence in the league this season.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have announced that Chris Jones will be taking over as the team’s new defensive coordinator, replacing Mark Washington. This move comes as a bit of a surprise to some, as Washington had been with the team for several years and had helped lead the defense to some impressive performances.

Jones, on the other hand, brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has previously served as a defensive coordinator for several other CFL teams, including the Edmonton Eskimos and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. In fact, Jones has a reputation for being one of the top defensive minds in the league, known for his aggressive and innovative schemes.

One of the key reasons why the Tiger-Cats decided to bring in Jones was his track record of success. In his previous stints as a defensive coordinator, he has consistently fielded some of the top defenses in the league. His ability to get the most out of his players and put them in positions to succeed has been a hallmark of his coaching style.

Additionally, Jones is known for his ability to adapt and adjust his game plan based on the strengths and weaknesses of his opponents. This flexibility will be crucial for the Tiger-Cats as they look to continue their success on the defensive side of the ball.

Overall, the hiring of Chris Jones as the new defensive coordinator for the Tiger-Cats is a bold move that could pay off big for the team. With his proven track record of success and innovative coaching style, Jones has the potential to take the defense to new heights and help lead the team to even greater success in the upcoming season. Fans will surely be eager to see how Jones puts his stamp on the defense and helps propel the Tiger-Cats to victory.
