No. 1 seed Coco Gauff was eliminated from the National Bank Open on Friday night, dropping a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Russia’s Diana Shnaider in the tournament’s third round.
Gauff, the world No. 2 and reigning US Open champion, had eight double faults in the loss on centre court.
The 20-year-old American was coming off a disappointing performance in Paris at the Olympics, where Gauff — her country’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony, the youngest-ever to hold the distinction and first-ever tennis player — was upset in the third round.
Shnaider, the world No. 24, is coming off an Olympic silver medal performance in women’s doubles.
More to come.
