Kaiden Guhle signs six-year, $33.3M extension with the Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have locked up one of the NHL’s brightest young blueliners for the next six years.

On Wednesday, Canadiens general Manager Kent Hughes announced a six-year, $33.3 million contract extension for defenseman Kaiden Guhle.

The new deal will see the 22-year-old earn an average annual salary of $5.55 million beginning in the 2025-26 season.

During the 2023-24 season with the Habs, Guhle tallied six goals and 16 assists. He ranked third on the team’s average ice time with 20:51, and second in blocked shots with 178.

In 114 total NHL games, the Sherwood Park, Alta., native has recorded 40 points.

Guhle, who was selected by Montreal in the first round (16th overall) in the 2020 NHL Draft, represented Canada at the 2021 IIHF World Championship, where he earned five points in nine games.

Guhle is entering the last season of his entry-level deal. He’s the second young Canadien to pen a long-term extension this month after Juraj Slafkovsky signed an eight-year, $60.8M deal on July 1.

The Montreal Canadiens have locked in one of their top young defensemen, Kaiden Guhle, with a lucrative six-year contract extension worth $33.3 million. The 19-year-old has shown immense potential since being drafted by the Canadiens in the first round of the 2020 NHL Draft.

Guhle made his NHL debut last season and quickly made an impact with his strong defensive play and physical presence on the ice. He has continued to impress the coaching staff and management with his development and maturity both on and off the ice.

The six-year extension is a clear sign of the Canadiens’ commitment to Guhle as a key piece of their future. General Manager Marc Bergevin spoke highly of Guhle’s potential and work ethic, stating that he believes the young defenseman has a bright future ahead of him in Montreal.

Guhle’s new contract solidifies his place in the Canadiens’ lineup for years to come and gives him the security to continue developing his game at the NHL level. With his size, skating ability, and defensive prowess, Guhle has the tools to become a top defenseman in the league.

Fans of the Canadiens can look forward to watching Guhle continue to grow and make an impact on the team as he enters the prime of his career. With his new contract in place, Guhle can now focus on improving his game and helping the Canadiens compete for a Stanley Cup in the coming years.
