Blue Jays Reportedly Trading Catcher Danny Jansen to Red Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays are finalizing a deal to trade catcher Danny Jansen to the Boston Red Sox, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported Saturday

Jansen, who will become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season, experienced a hot start to the 2024 campaign and attracted trade interest from several teams throughout MLB.

After opening the season with a wrist injury, the 28-year-old pushed his OPS all the way up to 1.002 in April before stabilizing his offensive prowess in May with 11 RBIs on 22 hits.

Jansen has suited up in seven seasons with the Blue Jays while battling a string of unlucky injuries. He has split time with Alejandro Kirk behind the dish this season.
Jansen is batting .212 with a .303 OBP and a .671 OPS in 2024.

In a surprising turn of events, the Toronto Blue Jays are reportedly in talks to trade catcher Danny Jansen to their division rival, the Boston Red Sox. This potential trade has caught many fans off guard, as Jansen has been a key player for the Blue Jays over the past few seasons.

Jansen, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in the 16th round of the 2013 MLB Draft, made his major league debut in 2018 and quickly established himself as a reliable catcher. Known for his strong defensive skills and ability to handle a pitching staff, Jansen has been a valuable asset behind the plate for the Blue Jays.

However, despite his defensive prowess, Jansen has struggled at the plate in recent years. In 2021, he hit just .183 with a .656 OPS in 89 games, leading to speculation that the Blue Jays may be looking to upgrade at the catcher position.

The Red Sox, on the other hand, are in need of a catcher after losing Christian Vazquez to free agency. Jansen could provide a solid defensive presence behind the plate for the Red Sox, while also potentially benefiting from a change of scenery and a fresh start in Boston.

While the trade has not been finalized yet, it will be interesting to see how it plays out and what other players or prospects may be involved in the deal. Both teams have a lot to gain from this potential trade, and it could have significant implications for the upcoming season.

Overall, while it may be tough for Blue Jays fans to see Jansen go, this trade could ultimately benefit both teams and help them address their respective needs heading into the 2022 season. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
