Blue Jays' Tiedemann seeks additional opinions from specialists

In a season where next to nothing has gone right for the Toronto Blue Jays, they will be holding their breath once again as top pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann is set to see a pair of specialists for his elbow.

Speaking to reporters ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, manager John Schneider said that Tiedemann will be visiting Dr. Keith Meister and Dr. Neal ElAttrache later this week to get a second and third opinion on his pitching arm.

Dr. Meister and Dr. ElAttrache are two of the most sought-after orthopedic surgeons in baseball.

Tiedemann originally hit the injured list in mid-April with ulnar nerve inflammation after making three starts for triple-A Buffalo.

But after completing his rehab in the lower minors, the 21-year-old was forced to leave his first appearance back with the Bisons early due to forearm tighness. That outing came on July 10 and saw the hard-throwing lefty toss 27 pitches in 1.0 inning of work. He allowed one run and one hit and walked three before coming out of the game.

This season with Buffalo, Tiedemann has a 6.00 ERA over 9.0 innings with 11 strikeouts and 12 walks.

In 2023, Tiedemann threw 44 innings across four minor-league levels and the Arizona Fall League (AFL). He finished the MiLB season with a 3.68 ERA, 82 strikeouts and 23 walks.

Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Julian Tiedemann is seeking additional opinions from specialists regarding his recent arm injury. The 23-year-old left-hander was placed on the injured list last week after experiencing discomfort in his throwing arm during a bullpen session.

Tiedemann, who was drafted by the Blue Jays in the fourth round of the 2018 MLB Draft, has shown promise in the minor leagues with his fastball and breaking ball. However, his injury has raised concerns about his long-term health and potential impact on his career.

In an effort to gather more information and explore all possible treatment options, Tiedemann has decided to seek out opinions from multiple specialists in the field of sports medicine. This decision reflects his commitment to getting back on the mound as soon as possible while also prioritizing his overall well-being.

By consulting with experts who have experience working with professional athletes, Tiedemann hopes to receive a comprehensive assessment of his injury and develop a personalized treatment plan that will facilitate his recovery and prevent future setbacks. This proactive approach demonstrates his dedication to his craft and determination to overcome any obstacles that may come his way.

While the timeline for Tiedemann’s return to the Blue Jays’ lineup remains uncertain, his willingness to seek out additional opinions from specialists is a positive step towards ensuring that he receives the best possible care and support during this challenging time. Fans of the team can rest assured that Tiedemann is taking the necessary steps to address his injury and come back stronger than ever.
