The Canada drone debacle isn’t the only soccer drama the Paris Olympics has experienced thus far.
On Wednesday, Argentina and Morocco’s opening Group B fixture ended in chaos. Morocco reigned supreme at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard 2-1, but not without confusion and late calls.
At the 90-minute mark, the score was 2-1 and the referee indicated 15 minutes of extra time for time wasting. In the final seconds, La Albiceleste‘s Cristian Medina scored a last-chance goal to salvage the match and tie it at 2-2. However, play was stopped immediately when fans stormed the pitch and threw bottles and cups at the players.
After the scene was cleared, it was discovered the referee had not blown the final whistle and the game was suspended by officials. Although Argentina’s goal came in the final minutes, the match was expected to continue a little bit longer.
After over an hour delay, the match resumed behind closed doors. The players had 20 minutes to warm up, and three minutes were played without fans in attendance.
Before the closed-door play began, the scoreline was changed back to 2-1 after VAR deemed Medina’s goal offside. The decision, which was made more than 60 minutes after the goal, sent shockwaves through the soccer community for the delayed nature.
Ahead of the incident, Morocco led the game 2-0 before Argentina’s comeback. For the World Cup winners, Giuliano Simeone scored in the 68th minute before Medina’s disallowed goal.
