Design and Renderings Revealed for Calgary's New Flames Arena

As its namesake suggests, it’s officially time for the Saddledome to ride off into the sunset.

The City of Calgary and Calgary Sports and Entertainment revealed design plans and digital renderings for the new event centre on Monday.

They also revealed a name for the building, calling it Scotia Place, according to Calgary Sports and Entertainment president Robert Hayes.

According to Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, the hope is that construction will be completed in 2027, in time for the Flames to play there in the 2027-28 season. It will have a capacity of 18,400.

Though perhaps not as on the nose as the Saddledome, the new arena represents the Flames in its own way with the creation of what organizers are calling “The Cauldron,” an intricately designed roof made to look like fire.

Scotia Place and the surrounding arena district will also include a community rink, a parkade and an indoor and outdoor event plaza.

The arena will be located two blocks north of Calgary’s current home, the Scotiabank Saddledome. The signature Calgary landmark has been the Flames’ home since it was built in 1983.

The city of Calgary is buzzing with excitement as new design and rendering plans have been revealed for the Calgary Flames’ new arena. The proposed arena, which is set to be built in the Victoria Park neighborhood, promises to be a state-of-the-art facility that will not only serve as the home of the Flames but also as a hub for entertainment and community events.

The design of the new arena, created by architectural firm HOK, features a sleek and modern aesthetic that pays homage to Calgary’s rich hockey history. The exterior of the building will be clad in glass and metal panels, creating a striking visual presence in the city skyline. Inside, fans can expect an immersive experience with seating close to the action, premium amenities, and cutting-edge technology throughout the facility.

One of the most exciting features of the new arena is the inclusion of a public plaza that will connect the arena to the surrounding neighborhood. This plaza will serve as a gathering space for fans before and after games, as well as a venue for community events and activities. Additionally, the arena will be surrounded by restaurants, shops, and green spaces, creating a vibrant and dynamic atmosphere in Victoria Park.

The renderings of the new arena showcase a world-class facility that is sure to elevate the fan experience and bring new energy to the city of Calgary. With construction set to begin in the coming months, residents can look forward to a bright future for sports and entertainment in their city. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project as it progresses towards completion.
