Rookie outfielder Tyler Stephenson hit a grand slam in the sixth inning to help the Cincinnati Reds beat the Chicago Cubs 7-4 on Sunday. Stephenson’s grand slam was his first career home run and came in just his second major league game.

The 24-year-old was called up from the Reds’ alternate training site on Friday and made his major league debut on Saturday, going 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. His impressive start has already made him a fan favorite in Cincinnati.

Stephenson’s grand slam was part of a five-run sixth inning for the Reds, who have now won five of their first six games to start the season. The win also marked the first series victory for the Reds over the Cubs since 2014.

In addition to Stephenson’s heroics, rookie infielder Jonathan India continued his hot start to the season with two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. India, the Reds’ first-round draft pick in 2018, is hitting .400 with three doubles and five RBIs in his first six games.

The Reds’ impressive start to the season has been fueled by their young talent, with rookies like Stephenson and India making significant contributions early on. With veterans like Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez also off to strong starts, the Reds look poised to compete in a tough National League Central division.

Manager David Bell praised Stephenson’s performance after the game, saying, “He’s a special player and he showed that today. We’re excited to see what he can do moving forward.”

With their win over the Cubs, the Reds improved to 5-1 on the season and sit atop the NL Central standings. They will look to continue their hot start as they begin a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday.
