Kyle Lowry signs one-year deal with 76ers, report confirms

Kyle Lowry is staying in his hometown.

The six-time NBA All-Star reached a one-year deal to remain with the Philadelphia 76ers, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported Thursday.

Lowry, who was born in Philadelphia, announced his decision to return to the 76ers on his personal Instagram account.

At 38 years and 108 days old, Lowry is the fifth-oldest active NBA player, younger than only Taj Gibson, Chris Paul, P.J. Tucker and LeBron James.

The Villanova product signed a one-year, $2.8 million deal with the 76ers in February after he was bought out by the Charlotte Hornets. In 23 regular-season games with Philadelphia, Lowry averaged 8.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 4.2 assists.

He also chipped in with seven points and four assists per game in six playoff games before the 76ers were eliminated by the New York Knicks.

The deal reunited Lowry with former Toronto Raptors coach Nick Nurse and allowed Lowry to play for his hometown 76ers for the first time in his career. Lowry and Nurse teamed up to win the Raptors’ first NBA Championship in 2019.

Lowry will provide a veteran presence on a star-studded 76ers roster that has made a couple of big splashes this off-season.

Lowry is an 18-year veteran, and just 25 players in NBA history have played at least 19 seasons in the league. Only four active players last season are older than Lowry: LeBron James, P.J. Tucker, Taj Gibson and Chris Paul.

Already armed with 2022-23 MVP Joel Embiid and 2023-24 Most Improved Player Tyrese Maxey, Philadelphia added nine-time All-Star Paul George in one of the biggest moves of this off-season.

During the Joel Embiid era, the 76ers have still not made it past the second round of the NBA playoffs. With the talent on the roster headed into 2024-25 season, the expectations will be sky-high in the City of Brotherly Love.
