Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho will not be playing in the Blue Jays vs. Giants game

After an injury-riddled Wednesday night, the Toronto Blue Jays are sending out a shorthanded lineup for the rubber match against the San Francisco Giants.

Toronto will be without shortstop Bo Bichette and outfielder Daulton Varsho after the two suffered injuries in the second game of the series.

Bichette, 26, left Wednesday’s game in the fourth inning with what the team said was right calf soreness. After the Blue Jays’ win, manager John Schneider said that Bichette would undergo an MRI.

Schneider said Bichette felt the pain Wednesday after he caught a pickoff throw to second base by catcher Alejandro Kirk in the second inning. He appeared to stumble after catching the bounced throw.

The shortstop spent 10 days on the IL in June with a right calf issue and in all, has missed 14 games this season.

The two-time All-Star is slashing .222/.275/.321 with four homers and 30 RBIs.

Replacing him will be Leo Jimenez, who has a .400 batting average in four games this season since being called up from triple-A Buffalo.

Varsho, 28, left in the third inning of Wednesday’s game with a left knee contusion, the team announced. Schneider said Varsho is day-to-day.

He suffered the injury after hitting a grounder down the first-base line during his at-bat in the second inning. He slid awkwardly as he attempted to avoid the tag from Giants pitcher Logan Webb.

Varsho is batting .197 with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs this season.

Davis Schneider will patrol left field in his stead and bat seventh.

Coverage for the game starts at 3 p.m. ET / noon PT on Sportsnet and Sportsnet+.

In a disappointing turn of events for fans of the Toronto Blue Jays and San Francisco Giants, two promising young players will be sitting out of their upcoming matchup. Bo Bichette of the Blue Jays and Daulton Varsho of the Giants will not be taking the field due to injuries.

Bichette, the 23-year-old shortstop for the Blue Jays, has been dealing with a nagging hamstring injury that has kept him out of the lineup for the past few games. Despite his young age, Bichette has quickly become one of the team’s most reliable hitters, boasting a .298 batting average and 22 home runs on the season. His absence will undoubtedly be felt by the Blue Jays as they look to secure a playoff spot in a tight American League East division.

On the other side, Varsho, a 25-year-old catcher for the Giants, has been sidelined with a wrist injury that has been bothering him for several weeks. Varsho has been a key contributor to the Giants’ success this season, hitting .271 with 12 home runs and providing solid defense behind the plate. His absence will leave a noticeable gap in the Giants’ lineup as they try to maintain their lead in the National League West.

While it is always disappointing to see talented players sidelined with injuries, both Bichette and Varsho are expected to make a full recovery and return to action soon. In the meantime, fans can look forward to seeing how their respective teams adjust to their absences and continue to compete for a spot in the postseason.
