Jets are in the process of acquiring restricted free agent Dylan Coghlan from the Hurricanes

After losing Brenden Dillon to New Jersey in free agency, the Winnipeg Jets are making a move to bolster their blue line.

Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Friday that the Jets are working to acquire defenceman Dylan Coghlan from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Coghlan, who previously played for the Vegas Golden Knights, has spent the past two seasons with the Hurricanes organization. In 2023-24, the 25-year-old played with the Springfield Thunderbirds in the AHL, suiting up for 61 games, where he scored 16 goals and recorded 41 points.

In July 2022, Coghlan was traded to the Hurricanes, along with Max Pacioretty, from Vegas for future considerations. He was offered a one-year contract by the Hurricanes ahead of 2023-24 worth $850,000. The restricted free agent, who has arbitration rights, is owed a new contract.

The return for Coghlan is not yet known.

The Winnipeg Jets are making moves to bolster their roster by acquiring restricted free agent Dylan Coghlan from the Carolina Hurricanes. Coghlan, a defenseman, has shown promise in his young career and could be a valuable addition to the Jets’ blue line.

Coghlan, 23, was originally signed by the Vegas Golden Knights as an undrafted free agent in 2017. He spent time in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves before making his NHL debut with the Golden Knights in the 2019-2020 season. In 2021, he was claimed off waivers by the Hurricanes, where he played in 13 games and recorded three assists.

Coghlan is known for his offensive abilities, with a strong shot from the point and good puck-moving skills. He also has good size at 6’2″ and 197 pounds, which allows him to play a physical game in his own end.

The Jets are likely looking to add depth to their defense with the acquisition of Coghlan. With his youth and potential, he could develop into a key player for the team in the future. It’s unclear what the Jets had to give up in order to acquire Coghlan, but it’s clear that they see value in adding him to their roster.

Overall, the addition of Dylan Coghlan could be a smart move for the Winnipeg Jets as they look to strengthen their defensive corps and compete in a tough Central Division. Only time will tell how Coghlan will fit in with his new team, but he certainly has the potential to make an impact on the ice.
