Winner of Group B to face Canada in quarterfinals of Copa America

After punching their ticket to the Copa America knockout round on Saturday, Canada will have to wait one more day to find out who they’ll play in their first elimination match.

Canada finished second in Group A with four points and advanced to the quarterfinals after a scoreless draw against Chile and a 2-0 Argentina win over Peru.

But who will Canada face on July 5? That’s yet to be determined.

What the team knows is that they’ll play the winner of Group B, but with Sunday’s slate of games set to ultimately decide that group, Canada will have to wait to see who they’ll see across the pitch in the knockout round.

At present, Venezuela has a commanding lead of the group, having beat both Ecuador and Mexico to pick up six points with a plus-two goal differential. If Venezuela can draw or win against Jamaica on Sunday, they’ll lock up the group and advance to play Canada.

But if Venezuela is not able to pick up a point, it opens the door for either Ecuador or Mexico to win the group.

If either team wins outright, they will be tied with Venezuela with six points, and the tiebreak will first go to whoever has the higher goal differential.

Ecuador currently holds a plus-one differential, while Mexico is even.

And in the rare case that Venezuela’s and either Mexico’s or Ecuador’s goal differential is the exact same, the next steps of tiebreak is as follows:

1. The tied team with the greater number of goals scored in all the group matches.

2. Head-to-head record between the tied teams, considering only those matches played in the group stage between the teams level on points and the above goal difference/goal scored criteria. This tiebreaker to be defined according to the following order: Number of points, goal differential, goals scored in the matches between the tied teams.

3. Fewer red cards.

4. Fewer yellow cards.

5. By the drawing of lots.

Though Canada is finished up with group play and has advanced, there is still plenty to be determined in Sunday’s slate of matches.
