Italy's Euro 2024 title defense ends as Switzerland advances to quarterfinals

BERLIN — Defending champion Italy crashed out of the European Championship after losing to Switzerland 2-0 in the last 16 on Saturday.

Goals in each half from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas gave the Swiss their first win over their southern neighbour for 31 years and set up a quarterfinal against England or Slovakia in Düsseldorf on July 6.

Switzerland dominated in terms of possession, shots, attacks and passes.

By the time Italy responded in the second half, the aggressive Swiss defence was able to deal with it as coach Murat Yakin’s game plan worked to perfection.

Freuler deservedly broke the deadlock in the 37th minute when he set up Vargas’ cross with his first touch and smashed it in with his next.

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, who had earlier denied Breel Embolo in a one-on-one, produced a flying save to deflect Fabian Riedler’s free-kick onto the post before the break.

But the second half had barely started before Vargas curled a shot from the edge of the penalty area inside the top right corner.

Italy’s hopes of defending their Euro 2024 title came to an end as Switzerland pulled off a stunning upset to advance to the quarterfinals of the tournament. The Swiss team, led by captain Granit Xhaka, put on a masterclass performance to secure a 2-1 victory over the reigning champions.

The match started off in favor of Italy, with the Azzurri dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities. However, Switzerland’s defense held strong, frustrating Italy’s attackers and preventing them from finding the back of the net.

Switzerland took advantage of a rare counterattack opportunity in the 35th minute, with Xherdan Shaqiri scoring a brilliant goal to give his team the lead. Italy responded quickly, with Federico Chiesa equalizing just before halftime.

The second half saw both teams pushing for the go-ahead goal, but it was Switzerland who ultimately found the breakthrough. In the 78th minute, Breel Embolo capitalized on a defensive error from Italy to score the winning goal, sending Switzerland through to the quarterfinals.

The loss marks the end of Italy’s Euro 2024 campaign, a disappointing result for a team that had high hopes of defending their title. Despite their early exit, Italy can take pride in their performances throughout the tournament and look to bounce back stronger in future competitions.

Switzerland, on the other hand, will be riding high on their victory and will be looking to carry their momentum into the quarterfinals. With their impressive display against Italy, the Swiss team has proven that they are a force to be reckoned with and will be a team to watch as the tournament progresses.

Overall, Italy’s Euro 2024 title defense may have come to an end, but the tournament continues to deliver thrilling matches and unexpected results. As Switzerland celebrates their victory, football fans around the world eagerly await the next chapter in this exciting competition.
