In the Toronto Blue Jays‘ marathon 14-inning win over the Pittsburgh Pirates, a pair of key contributors were unavailable to play.
After the game, manager John Schneider told reporters that closer Jordan Romano’s elbow didn’t bounce back after his last outing in Chicago and Daulton Varsho had food poisoning.
Romano pitched the ninth inning against the White Sox on Wednesday, allowing a home run to catcher Korey Lee, while picking up one strikeout on his way to his eighth save of the season. However, in the outing, Romano’s fastball velocity was down from his yearly average.
The 31-year-old right-hander has struggled after beginning the season on the injured list, posting a 6.59 ERA and 13 strikeouts through 13.2 innings. He has also picked up a pair of losses.
Schneider said the team will see how Romano feels before deciding whether he can play Saturday against Pittsburgh..
Varsho, meanwhile, had played in Toronto’s last four games before Friday.
There were multiple opportunities in the Blue Jays’ series opener where it would have made sense to have the 27-year-old outfielder pinch run.
Varsho has slashed .205/.293/.438 with a team-leading 10 home runs through 52 games.
