49ers to place RB Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve, according to report

San Francisco 49ers superstar running back Christian McCaffrey is being placed on the injured reserve with Achilles tendinitis and calf tightness, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Saturday.

He will be forced to miss at least four weeks before the team can re-assess if he’s available to return in mid-October.

McCaffrey was ruled out of the team’s Week 2 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings earlier in the week after being held out of practice on Friday.

Following Friday’s practice, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team was considering placing the running back on the IR, saying that Thursday’s practice was “his worst day.”

McCaffrey, 28, sustained the initial injuries in training camp and missed four weeks of practice before returning to the team early last week. He was a late scratch for the team’s Week 1 matchup against the New York Jets.

McCaffrey led the NFL last season with 2,023 yards from scrimmage and was tied for the league lead with 21 touchdowns, winning AP Offensive Player of the Year.

In his absence, the 49ers fielded third-year RB Jordan Mason, who rushed for a career-high 147 yards and a touchdown in the 32-19 win over New York.

The San Francisco 49ers have reportedly made the decision to place star running back Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve. This move comes after McCaffrey suffered a significant injury during the team’s recent game against the Seattle Seahawks.

McCaffrey, who has been a key player for the 49ers this season, has been dealing with various injuries throughout the year. However, this latest injury is said to be more severe and will require an extended period of recovery.

By placing McCaffrey on injured reserve, the 49ers are able to free up a roster spot while also allowing him the time he needs to fully heal and rehabilitate. This move also ensures that McCaffrey will not be rushed back onto the field before he is ready, reducing the risk of further injury.

While losing a player of McCaffrey’s caliber is certainly a blow to the 49ers, the team is confident in their depth at the running back position and believes they have the talent to continue to be successful without him. In the meantime, they will focus on supporting McCaffrey in his recovery and look forward to his return to the field when he is fully healthy.

Overall, this decision to place Christian McCaffrey on injured reserve is a strategic move by the 49ers to prioritize his long-term health and well-being. Fans will undoubtedly miss seeing him on the field, but they can take solace in knowing that he is in good hands and will be back stronger than ever when he is ready.
